Vsevolod Mikhailovich Garshin (1855-1888) - Russian writer, poet, art critic. He was born on February 2 (14), 1855 in the estate of Priyatnaya Dolina in the Yekaterinoslav province. After graduating from high school, Vsevolod Mikhailovich entered the Mining Institute, but never received a higher education - in 1877, Russia declared war on Turkey, and he volunteered for the front. In one of the first battles, Garshin bravely led the regiment into an attack. He was wounded in the leg, and could no longer fight. Having received an officer's rank and retired, Vsevolod Mikhailovich took up literary activity. His first stories were devoted to military themes. The most popular were "Four Days", "From the Memories of Private Ivanov", "Coward". In the early 1880s, the writer's mental illness worsened, and he was forced to spend about two years in a psychiatric hospital. In 1883, he married a student of women's medical courses, N. M. Zolotilova, and was very happy for several years. However, this outburst was followed by severe, prolonged depression, which caused the writer's death. In the spring of 1888, the public was shocked by the news that Garshin had committed suicide. The author received recognition several decades after his death. His works began to be published en masse only after the Great Patriotic War.-------------------------------------------------- An antique postcard featuring a portrait of Russian writer and poet Vsevolod Garshin, printed as a lithograph in the Soviet Union around 1917.
