Whitby Jet was brought to the attention of the world by Queen Victoria who used Whitby Jet as part of her mourning attire. Today, genuine Whitby Jet is highly collectable and sought after world wide. This necklace features graduating from huge 3/4 Inch diameter to 3/8 inch jet gems that have retained their high polish of the blackest of black color with a concealed clasp that opens and closes tightly. It is strung with a black cord and measures 21 inches long. Whitby jet is very light weight so it is comfortable to wear. Weight: 58.8 grams. In good condition commensurate with it's age. The ends of these beads are flat where the hole has been drilled attesting to them being hand carved. Whitby jet was hard to work with due to it's brittle nature. Some of the beads in this necklace have a few cracks which is very common for such fragile material as Whitby Jet and due to it's age so the necklace has been priced accordingly.
