Arnold Friberg (1913-2010) was a well known designer, illustrator, and painter. Friberg joined the University of Utah art department studio teaching staff in 1949, this after early training in his native state of Illinois first as a sign and show card painter and then as a student at Chicago's Academy of Fine Arts and American Academy of Art. Already in the midst of a successful career as an illustrator. Friberg was by that time nest known as the maker of 'Mountie illustrations' for calendars (he had painted his first one for Northwest Paper Company in 1937). his overall visual statement would continue to be one of popularity cherished ideals set within firmly and smoothly finished narratives, this through years of work to create famed series paintings to illustrate not only stories from the Book of Mormon and later the history of football, but in the mid-50s, paintings and designs for Cecil B. DeMille's film The Ten Commandments. To be nominated for an Oscar in 1957 in connection with his work for DeMille, Friberg would lose that competition but achieve a degree of fame that today he and others see as a support for his claims as a part of Utah's heritage.
