Description: Arnot Bristly Locust, Robinia fertilis, Shrub Seeds Very Hardy, Very Fast Growth, Fragrant Flowering Shrub, Cold, Heat, Wind, Urban, Salt, Deer, Rabbit and Drought Tolerant, Nitrogen Fixing, Erosion Control, Adaptable Arnot Bristly Locust is an open branched, woody, deciduous shrub, vigorously growing to a height of 8 to 12 feet in just a few years. It spreads rapidly by root suckers, particularly those soils light in texture. Leaves are alternate, compound-pinnate, dark green color, turning yellow in autumn. Branches are hispid, densely covered with stout, bristly hairs. Flowering usually begins the second year. Flowers are fragrant sweet pea-like pink or pale purple, borne on 2 to 4 inch racemes, blooming in May and June and are quite showy. Flowers are followed by brown seed pods. This is an extremely hardy shrub that survives all soils except wet. It will grow in sterile sandy soil and is tolerant of saline and dry conditions. It is perhaps the best erosion control shrub for steep sloping sites with active erosion. It provides quick, woody, vegetative cover on droughty, critical areas needing stabilizing cover. It has the ability to fix nitrogen in the soil and with light shade it does not inhibit growth of annual and perennial herbs. Its value for wildlife food is minimal but is a very attractive shrub when in bloom.
