On his grandfathers farm, he delighted in the cultivated fields and adjoining woodlots. And as he traipsed through the landscape, he became enamored with its animals. Nothing has changed. The calling to the outdoors still fascinates him. It has also fed his 40-year career as a wildlife artist. And his devotion to his subjects from rainbow trout to bush babies has pushed this Burnt Hills illustrator to the top of his field. He is especially known for his depiction of prehistoric creatures. His drawings, such as that of the recently discovered Indohyus, are often the worlds first glimpse of an extinct critter. Self-taught, Buell began his life as a working artist in 1977 at the New York State Museum, where he was a natural history illustrator. During his time there, he remembers examining the ancient bones of the Cohoes mastodon and his interest in prehistoric animals deepened.
