These are new and upcoming technologies that will redefine the way things will be made in the future. Well today, I’m here to tell you that in the future almost everything will be made using some kind of additive manufacturing method. 3D printing is just one of many types of additive manufacturing. Unlike CNC milling, 3D printing doesn’t waste material and can design things one can only dream about doing using CNC milling. We initially jumped into 3D printing in order to fabricate our new carbon fiber table inserts but soon saw unlimited opportunities to do much more. Over the past 5 years we have fought to keep the price of our own in-house tension meter in a price range that the average woodworker could afford. Our goal was to be able to offer a reliable and inexpensive tension meter so that anybody could have one and that they became a commonplace tool for the band saw user. We offered our tension meter at the affordable price of $135 when we introduced it many years ago. Unfortunately, we have seen the labor and material costs slowly increase year after year to the point that we were forced to slowly raise the price. It now sits at over $200 still well below our competition but still too high for our tastes. But with the help of 3D printing we again can offer you a tension meter at an affordable price. Did we compromise on quality and reliability? No way, in fact I think our new 3D printed tension meter is actually better than our CNC milled aluminum tension meter. You see, when we designed our new tension meter we were able to add some subtle changes to the design that actually improved its performance. These design improvements are not incorporated into our aluminum version due to being too costly to implement. As word gets out about this new product, I truly believe that it will become the most common place tension meters for band saws. All the same great features as our discontinued aluminum model. Our new 3D printed tension meter is made from black and red ABS plastic, the same as your cordless power tools. This gives the body a textured surface to eliminate slippage. It also uses the exact same highly sensitive dial indicator we use on our more expensive model. Reading in 0.0001” increments and has the same dual scale which reads in pounds per square inch and metric kilopascals. Maximum tension reading is 50,000 psi or 320,000 kPa. This is more than enough since the maximum tension recommendation we have seen from the blade manufacturers is 35,000 psi. It features all the improvements made to our aluminum tension meter plus a few more. All hardware used is stainless steel (we hate rust) and the pivoting arm now features Teflon side washers to further reduce friction. A Teflon pad is used as a friction free surface for the indicator contact point to further reduce frictional resistance. The extra large stainless steel blade clamping thumbscrews also have stainless steel cone pointed set screws facing them to provide exceptional contact pressure on the blade while it is clamped to eliminate blade slippage. We have also incorporated stainless steel bolts at each clamping point to reduce the clamping forces on the plastic to eliminate stress cracks. Comes in the same blow-molded case like our aluminum version.
