The Hortus is due to the art-loving Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, Bishop of Eichstätt (reigned 1594-1612), who had his seat of government converted into a princely castle, with magnificent gardens underneath. The Nuremberg pharmacist Basilius Besler (1561-1629) commissioned a magnificent botanical publication, the "Hortus Eystettensis", the garden of Eichstätt. First published in 1613, the work shows a total of 1084 plants on 367 full-page copper plates. These pieces are formerly from the art collection of Louise Lester Kranzberg, my sister's former mother-in-law. Both Louise and her son David are deceased.
