Description: Here we have the complete works of Northwest indie-rock trailblazers BEAT HAPPENING: Crashing Through, a CD box set released in 2002 by K Records. This copy was autographed on the backside of the box by Bret, Calvin and Heather. As profoundly archetypal in its way as the Velvet Underground, Beat Happening demonstrated that punk’s rebel spirit could be expressed just as effectively by defying rock conventions as by defying those of society. Hence the contrived (or sincere, you get to guess) anti-star innocence and cuteness: use of first names only, scanty, handwritten credits, blurry photos and crude drawings, sardonically offhand lyrics, conversational singing, a endless fascination with teenage themes and charmingly basic song structures. They also flouted rock'n'roll tradition by electing to go without bass guitar, and highlighting the insignificance of instrumental skill by rotating guitar and drum responsibilities among its members. The result is casual, ramshackle pop that's so utterly charming that you can't help but smile. They played with and refined this formula through five albums, numerous singles, various compilation tracks and six videos... all of which you'll find here. Five discs cover their five albums, the sixth is a mop-up CD called Music To Climb The Apple Tree By that gathers up the non-LP rarities, the seventh compiles all their videos with a handful of live tracks. You also get a CD-sized 92-page book that tells the Beat Happening story with tons of photos and awesome notes from Lois Maffeo. Truly, a labor of love for a band that deserves it.
