Description: Online review: This work by author Mary Beth Norton, one of her earliest works (I believe originally published in 1972), provides an illuminating review of the rationale behind many Loyalists who decided to retain their allegiance to the British government during the American War for Independence. Norton follows several well-known and not-so-well-known American Loyalists through the pre-war years, the years of conflict, including the lives of several Loyalists who moved to London and other parts of the British Empire and were surprised at the lack of support they frequently received from their government. While the book is older and many subsequent books have been published examining the lives of American Loyalists (see Maya Jasanoff, Robert C. Calhoon, Thomas B. Allen, and Rebecca Brannon, for a few), Ms. Norton's book holds up very well and provides plenty of great illustrations of what it was like for colonists in each area of the American colonies to remain loyal to the British crown. It is also highly readable. I highly recommended this book for anyone interested in the subject. We will ALWAYS COMBINE SHIPPING on items that do not ship for free.
