Doulton Burslem has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. The story begins with John Doulton, who founded the original company in 1815 in Vauxhall, London, alongside Martha Jones and John Watts. Initially, the company, known as Jones, Watts & Doulton, produced utilitarian household items like bottles and pitchers. In 1877, Henry Doulton, John’s son, acquired the Pinder, Bourne & Company in Burslem, Staffordshire. This acquisition marked the beginning of Doulton’s presence in Burslem, which became a significant center for their production of sanitary ware and domestic earthenware. After Pinder’s retirement in 1882, the company began trading under the name Doulton & Co. and expanded its production to include decorative items and bone china. The Burslem factory became renowned for its high-quality decorative pieces, including the famous “Spanish Ware.” The factory’s success led to numerous expansions and innovations, such as the introduction of the steam-driven potter’s wheel and the employment of talented artists like Charles Noke. In 1901, the company received the Royal Warrant from King Edward VII, allowing it to use the name "Royal Doulton". Today, Doulton Burslem is celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship and artistic contributions to the world of ceramics. c1892 Antique Plate by Doulton Burslem Scallop Edged Spanish Ware Doulton Burslem’s “Spanish Ware” is a distinctive line of ceramics known for its intricate and elegant designs.
