The first edition of this work was one of the earliest books to be illustrated from photographs. Comprising an edition of the Rubáiyat Of Omar Khayyám from the fourth version of the translation by Edward Fitzgerald. A selection of quatrains translated to English from the original Persian. These verses became popular by the later half of the nineteenth century, and was published in over one hundred editions, inspiring other translations to English and many other languages. CONDITION In the original publisher's cloth binding, with gilt to front board and spine. Externally very smart with minor shelfwear and slight bumping to head and tail of spine. Slight edge wear and minor rubbing to cloth to extremities and joints. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are extremely bright and clean. With various coloured illustrations photographed from life studies by Adelaide Hanscom and Blanche Cumming.
