Description: About the story .... This malicious and satirical novel lays bare the innermost lives of celebrated authors, critics and lady-managers, in the most witty and sophisticated manner. The four principal characters in the story are Edward Driffield "the grand old man of English letters," his first wife, an ex-barmaid of easy virtue and a great natural charm (she of course, is the skeleton in the cupboard) Alroy Kear, popular novelist, lecturer and critic and Driffield's second wife. "Cakes and Ale" is written in the first person by on William Ashenden, an English novelist (he might well be Somerset Maugham himself) who spent his early manhood in the village where Driffield and his first wife lived and loved and shocked local society with their bohemian way of life. W. Somerset Maugham has written a fruity seasoned novel, salted with a cynicism and worldliness that will enthrall the reader. This book measures 6 3/8" by 4 1/4" with 196 pages. This is a great slightly read copy of this book that does have some edge wear, there is a slight slant to the spine, few wrinkles to the covers, paint is starting to chip on the spine edges, yet still a great, colorful copy of this book. Please look carefully at the pictures for the best idea of the condition. This is another wonderful book from the late Mark Goodman, Green Lion Books.
