This is an original from the station, not a repop … Please reference the photos of this icon, which was likely forged even before “The Great Steel Fleet” era on NYC's famous Water Level Route. Here are the details: It is cast iron with the mounting bracket forged on the back and is in excellent condition for its age. Zero rust or dents. Measurements are 27 3/4 inches wide, by 7 1/2 inches tall, and just under 7/16-of-an-inch thick (not including the bracket). The mounting bracket at its base is about 4-1/8 inch tall by 1-1/16 inch wide, by 1-1/4 inch deep. The bracket holes are solid - this sign can be mounted for viewing enjoyment. Total weight is 17.5 pounds. The sign received new paint at some point in its life after being pulled from service. There is no rust. The gold paint is true to New York Central’s original lettering standards and was applied very carefully. (You may notice a few places in the photos where the gold paint is not arrow-straight, but keep in mind, these signs were originally hand-painted by NYC shop forces!) It is a beautiful example of NYC System history. While we do not have details on when it was removed from service, and cannot say if the sign was displayed into the Penn Central or Conrail eras, it nonetheless is an excellent link to the historic Elkhart station, history, which hosted trains such as the Twentieth Century Limited, Lake Shore Limited, Pacemaker and others for much of the 20th century, and serves Amtrak's "Lake Shore" and Capital Limited passengers today.
