Description: I'm selling the 3rd edition of Fashions in Foods, a celebrity cookbook published in 1931 by the Beverly Hills Woman's Club with a foreword written by Will Rogers, who died four years later in a plane crash. The book is inscribed by "Virginia" to "Marguerite and Will," and I have not been able to identify those three, but the cover-facing page was signed by five well-known actresses from the silent film era, some of whom later performed in sound films and TV. Signatures are from Ruth Clifford, Doris Lloyd, Marguerite Churchill, Patsy Ruth Miller, and Lois Wilson (info on their work is below). These books are uncommon, particularly signed and in good condition. I'm not a book "grader," so please look at the photos closely before bidding. There is a small tear at the bottom left corner of the cover (see last pic), some staining inside both covers, and a few recipes have X marks next to them in pencil. It's in good shape to be 93 years old and a true gem of Hollywood history, filled with illustrated advertisements and recipes contributed by legends including Clara Bow, Joan Crawford, Eddie Cantor, Jackie Cooper, Douglas Fairbanks, Janet Gaynor, Mrs. Herbert Hoover, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Carol Lombard, Mary Pickford, Zasu Pitts, Dolores del Rio, Norma Shearer, Barbara Stanwyck, Eric Von Stroheim, Norma Talmadge, and several others. From Wikipedia, some tidbits about the five actors who signed this copy: Ruth Clifford (1900–1998) was an American actress of leading roles in silent films whose career lasted into the TV era. Clifford began her career at 15 at Universal and by her mid-20s she was playing leads, including the role of Abraham Lincoln's lost love, Ann Rutledge, in The Dramatic Life of Abraham Lincoln (1924). She was a favorite of director John Ford, who cast her in eight films. She was also for a time the voice of Walt Disney's Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck. Her obituary in the Los Angeles Times noted that she "became a prime source for historians of the silent screen era." Doris Lloyd (1891–1968) was an English-American film and stage actress. She is best known for her roles in The Time Machine (1960) and The Sound of Music (1965). Lloyd appeared in two Academy Award winners and four other nominees. She performed in more than 150 films between 1925–1967. Her most famous roles were in the Tarzan films starring Johnny Weissmuller. She portrayed a nurse in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943) with Lon Chaney Jr. as the Wolf Man and Bela Lugosi as Frankenstein's monster. She voiced one of the roses in Disney's Alice in Wonderland (1951), later making appearances in Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music, both with Julie Andrews. Patsy Ruth Miller (1904–July 1995) was an American film actress who played Esméralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) opposite Lon Chaney Jr. After being discovered by actress Alla Nazimova (founder of the famous Garden of Allah apartments) at a Hollywood party, Miller got her first break with a small role in Camille, which starred Rudolph Valentino. Her roles gradually improved, and she was chosen as a WAMPAS Baby Star in 1922. Marguerite Churchill (1910–2000) was an American stage and film actress whose career lasted from 1922–1952. She was John Wayne's first leading lady, in The Big Trail (1930), his first leading role. She appeared with Wayne the following year in Girls Demand Excitement (1931), with Spencer Tracy and George Raft in Quick Millions (1931), with Will Rogers in Ambassador Bill (1931), with Warner Oland in Charlie Chan Carries On (1931), with George O'Brien in Riders of the Purple Sage (1931), with Charles Farrell in Girl Without a Room (1933), with Ralph Bellamy in The Final Hour (1936), with Boris Karloff in The Walking Dead (1936), and with Edward Van Sloan in Dracula's Daughter (1936). Lois Wilson (1894–1988) was an American actress who settled in at Paramount Pictures in 1919, where she remained until 1927. She was a WAMPAS Baby Star of 1922 and appeared in 150 movies. Her most recognized screen portrayals are Molly Wingate in The Covered Wagon (1923) and Daisy Buchanan in the silent film version of The Great Gatsby (1926). She acted opposite male stars such as Rudolph Valentino and John Gilbert. Wilson ventured to Broadway and TV after her final role in The Girl from Jones Beach (1949) with Ronald Reagan. She played in soap operas The Guiding Light in 1951, The Secret Storm and The Edge of Night. She made a guest appearance with her friend Gloria Swanson on The Gloria Swanson Hour in 1948. This item would be a phenomenal acquisition for a Hollywood memorabilia collector, perhaps someone who can determine the origin of the inscription and who the recipients of the book were at the time. There may be an interesting story there. U.S. bidders only, ships free via Priority Mail, no returns accepted. Thanks for looking!
