ALL THE YEAR ROUND, A Weekly Journal, Conducted by Charles Dickens Published: London: Published at 26, Wellington Street, Strand HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: "All the Year Round" was a Victorian periodical, being a British weekly literary magazine founded and owned by Charles Dickens, published between 1859 and 1895 throughout the United Kingdom. In 1868 Dickens announced a "New Series" for All the Year Round. After his death in 1870 his eldest son Charles Dickens Jr. became the owner and editor. In 1989 the magazine started a "Third Series". It had its last issue on March 30, 1895.Series: Each volume was 26 numbers long, half a year (thus Vol. 1 was Nos 1-26, Vol. 2 was Nos 27-52, Vol. 3 was Nos 53-78, but the annuals and seasonal extras counted for additional numbers.)1. "First Series": Vol. 1 (April 30, 1859) to Vol. 20 (November 28, 1868)2. "New Series": Vol. 1 (December 5, 1868) to Vol. 43 (December 29, 1888)3. "Third Series": Vol. 1 (January 5, 1889) to Vol. 13 (March 30, 1895) This 3 volume set includes: 1874 - New Series Volume XII. 573 pages, April 18,1874 to Oct. 10, 1874. Includes Christmas Edition 1874, "The Opal Ring", pages 1-45. "1884 - New Series Volume XXXIV. 548 pages, May 3,1884 to Oct. 4, 1884. Includes Extra Summer Number pages 1-71. 1889 - Third Series Volume II. 620 pages, July 6,1889 to Dec. 28, 1889. Includes Extra Autumn Number with Almanack for 1890 & Extra Christmas Number for 1889. WHY IS THIS SET UNIQUE? 1. The 1889 Edition includes "THE EXTRA CHRISTMAS NUMBER FOR 1889 & THE ALMANACK FOR 1890"2. The 1884 Edition is a bit unusual - it is stated in the Table of Contents that it includes "THE EXTRA SPRING NUMBER FOR 1884 while on page 1 of the extra it states "The Extra SUMMER NUMBER".3. The 1874 Edition is unique for 2 reasons: A. It includes "The Extra Christmas Number entitled THE OPAL RING" B. It is clearly stated on the spine VOL 13, while the face/opening page states "VOLUME XII". This appears to be an error made by the publisher!3. The 1874 Edition is notable for 2 reasons: A. It includes the Extra Christmas Number entitled "THE OPAL RING" B. There appears to be an error - the spine clearly shows "VOL. 13" while the face page states "Volume XII". This is handsome set in very good condition that displays quite well. It has unique features which in my opinion make it somewhat rare and collectible.
