"Bold woodblock print by Charles Surendorf (American, 1906-1979). A covered bridge spans a large valley over a river, leading to a winding mountain road. Above the bridge, there is a prominent mountain ridge. This piece is extremely high contrast, with black, saturated ink. However, it demonstrates Surendorf's careful use of highlights to keep the composition nicely balanced. His paintings and prints depict the rough-and-tumble life of the old California mining country in a regionalist style akin to that of Thomas Hart Benton".
