Description: Images one through four are of my stock specimen plant flowering in cultivation and an image of a wild plant in nature (third photo). The plant for sale is the well-established, flowering sized division shown in the fifth through seventh images, planted in NZ long fiber sphagnum in an 6” basket. Longest leaves 36”/90 cm incl. petioles. This is one of a few established divisions I have available of my stock specimen at this time. There are only a handful of Chorigyne pendula in collections outside of a few of the major US botanical gardens. This is a unique and very desirable hanging basket plant that can be grown to maturity in a 12”/30 cm basket. Spadices lightly fragrant at anthesis; pleasantly scented of melon. Chorigyne pendula is a spectacular species of epiphytic cyclanth (aka “Panamá Hat Plants”) found in the Caribbean lowland and foothill rainforests from northern Costa Rica through to central Panamá. This plant is more or less exclusively in cultivation in botanical gardens, where it is effectively used a superb epiphytic display plant. In nature, this species is generally found growing on undercanopy branches where, in western Panamá, it sometimes occurs together with the rare epiphytic cycad Zamia pseudoparasitica and the beautiful strap leaf aroid, Anthurium wendlingeri. Leaves to about 4’ long when happy. Easy to grow, somewhat temperature tolerant to at least 48 degrees F and 95 F for short periods. Needs warmth, abundant water, and space to thrive.
