Montgomery Ward was founded by Aaron Montgomery Ward in 1872. Ward had conceived of the idea of a dry goods mail-order business in Chicago, Illinois, after several years of working as a traveling salesman among rural customers. He observed that rural customers often wanted "city" goods but their only access to them was through rural retailers who had little competition and offered no guarantee of quality. Ward also believed that by eliminating intermediaries, he could cut costs and make a wide variety of goods available to rural customers, who could purchase goods by mail and pick them up at the nearest train station. After several false starts, including the destruction of his first inventory by the Great Chicago Fire, Ward started his business at his first office, either in a single room at 825 North Clark Street, or in a loft above a livery stable on Kinzie Street between Rush and State Streets. He had two partners and used $1,600 they had raised in capital. The first catalog in August 1872 consisted of an 8 by 12 in. single-sheet price list, showing 163 articles for sale with ordering instructions. Ward wrote the first catalog copy. His two partners left the following year, but he continued the struggling business and was joined by his future brother-in-law George Robinson Thorne. In the first few years, the business was not well received by rural retailers. Considering Ward a threat, they sometimes publicly burned his catalog. Despite the opposition, however, the business grew at a fast pace over the next several decades, fueled by demand primarily from rural customers who were attracted by the wide selection of items unavailable to them locally. Customers were also attracted by the innovative and unprecedented company policy of "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back", which Ward began using in 1875. Ward turned the copy writing over to department heads, but he continued poring over every detail in the catalog for accuracy. Ward became widely popular among residents of Chicago, where he championed the causes of the common folk over the wealthy. He was notable for his successful fight to establish public parkland along Lake Michigan. In 1883, the company's catalog, which became popularly known as the "Wish Book", had grown to 240 pages and 10,000 items. In 1896, Wards acquired its first serious competition in the mail order business, when Richard Warren Sears introduced his first general catalog. In 1900, Wards had total sales of $8.7 million, compared to $10 million for Sears, Roebuck and Co., and the two companies were to struggle for dominance for much of the 20th century. By 1904, the company had grown such that three million catalogs, weighing 4 pounds each, were mailed to customers. Before the Sears catalog, farmers typically bought supplies (often at high prices and on credit) from local general stores with narrow selections of goods. Prices were negotiated (by the man of the family), and depended on the storekeeper's estimate of a customer's creditworthiness. Sears took advantage of this by publishing catalogs offering customers a wider selection of products at clearly stated prices. The business grew quickly. The first Sears catalog was published in 1888. By 1894, the Sears catalog had grown to 322 pages, featuring sewing machines, bicycles, sporting goods, automobiles (produced from 1905 to 1915 by Lincoln Motor Car Works of Chicago, not related to the current Ford line), and a host of other new items. By 1895, the company was producing a 532-page catalog. Sales were greater than $400,000 in 1893 and more than $750,000 two years later. By 1896, dolls, stoves and groceries had been added to the catalog. In 1906 Sears opened its catalog plant and the Sears Merchandise Building Tower in Chicago.[9] Also, by that time, the Sears catalog had become known in the industry as "the Consumers' Bible". In 1933, Sears issued the first of its famous Christmas catalogs known as the "Sears Wishbook", a catalog featuring toys and gifts, separate from the annual Christmas Catalog. The catalog also entered the language, particularly of rural dwellers, as a euphemism for toilet paper. From 1908 to 1940, the catalog even included ready-to-assemble kit houses. Novelists and story writers often portrayed the importance of the catalog in the emotional lives of rural folk. For children and their parents the catalog was a "wish book" that was eagerly flipped through. It was not a question of purchasing but of dreaming; they made up stories about the lives of the models on the pages. The catalog was a means of entertainment, though much of its magic wore off with the passing of childhood. This history filled DVD contains all of the following catalogs. Please note that some of the larger catalogs have had pages lost over the years. Comments from happy customers who bought many other of our items from our vast catalog: In 1959 I purchased an original home built “Thing” and ran it for several years on the Willamette River. Years later it got rotten and subsequently discarded. Now the Son of the man who originally built it from the magazine plans in his wood shop in Milwaukie, Oregon works with me and he helped his Dad build it in 1958. We decided to search for the plans and if we found them; I (an engineer) would upgrade it for two adults and build it. I bought your disk and building started last May 25 and it was ready to launch July 20th. You are welcome to use the photos and my “title” as a former white water guild; River Rat Bob from Oregon. Hope you enjoy the pictures attached. I am 60 years old but still chasing the dream as you see from my smile in the boat. Thank you for the great plans. Unbelievable amount of information for the money. I can't wait to get started. -Jeff D., New Mexico. I built the doghouse using the plans I purchased from you a week ago, and it was great. Easy to read and follow, it was a great purchase. The kids helped, and the dog just loves it. Thank you so much. It'll take years to go through all the stuff I want to build on your CD. Andrew H., Colorado. The jungle gym for the kids is amazing. We bought the plans 2 weeks ago, and built the whole thing last weekend. We are so impressed with the amount of information shown. It is a virtual encyclopedia of plans. Thanks. Josh L., New Mexico. My God!! That's more boats than I can build in a lifetime! Unbelievable! The best I have ever seen. Thank you! Craig J., South Carolina. I've seen plenty of plans on boats. This is the best all around package of information I've come across. Jake M., Florida. This has saved me so much time. I've spent weeks looking for stuff like this. Well worth the few bucks to get this CD. Jimmy K., Arkansas. I bought a CD a few weeks ago that had a bunch of links and junk on it that was ripped off from websites and other useless information. I thought long and hard before trying again and buying from you. I can actually use this stuff. I'm so glad I did. A.K., Arizona. Frequently Asked Questions: Why should I buy from you? There are lots of places to buy similar stuff on ebay. What makes you so special? What separates us from the rest is that we want you to be happy. If you're happy, you'll buy from us again and tell your friends. Getting one sale from you is great, but we want the next sale from you and the next one after that. It isn't worth a few bucks to us to have one unhappy customer. If you are unhappy, tell us and let us try to fix the problem. How many sellers will say that? Yeah, so, there are lots of other sellers on ebay. Are you saying the rest of them will rip me off? No, of course not. But, beware of what people sell on ebay. Many sellers on here will charge you an exorbitant amount for shipping. Many will "claim" to provide discount shipping only when you contact them, they'll tell you they'll take a quarter off the shipping price for each additional item. We never do that. Our shipping policy is very straight forward. All of our items ship free to the USA, simple as that, so there's nothing for you to worry about regarding combined shipping! You'll see that we not only offer more content per package then our competition, but also at the cheapest price too. I want to see a sample before I commit to buying. Please send me a free sample. We are sorry that our description, as well as our strong ebay reputation, does not provide you with a strong enough comfort level to purchase from us. With that said, we do not provide "free samples". What if my disk arrives damaged? We offer a no muss, no fuss guarantee that all damaged disks are replaced free of charge. FAST SHIPPING!! All discs are mailed out within 1-2 business days guaranteed!!! ---------------------------- Have you bought plans on CD's on ebay before only to be disappointed? Did you buy a CD only to find a bunch of useless links on it? Did you buy a disc and when it arrives it doesn't work and you can't contact the seller? Well, with us, your satisfaction is GUARANTEED! All of our discs are tested before shipping to ensure customer satisfaction. In VERY RARE cases does a disc get damaged and rendered unreadable in shipment. If our disc shows up and it won't read on your DVD or CD Drive, let us know, an we'll replace it. If you are unsatisfied in any way, let us know, we want you to be happy. In some cases, customers bought DVD ROM discs and tried to play them on their CD ROM. In those cases, it is not our responsibility for your hardware compatibility issues. ALL of our DVD's are clearly marked as DVD's in the auction listing. BUY FROM A SELLER YOU CAN TRUST! CHECK OUT MY GREAT FEEDBACK! thanks for shipping so quickly Perfect ! All of our disks are labeled with a clean text only label. The disks are made this way for speed and cost, which translates into lower cost for you. The disk labels do not contain fancy artwork. We focus our efforts on the quality of the material on the disk. We do not believe in charging you an extra 3 or 4 dollars like some companies out there just to throw in a 25 cent plastic case and slap a color label on an item. USA CUSTOMERS: Most times, your package will arrive in about 5 days after we ship them depending on where you are at. However, lately the Post Office it seems has not been very cooperative with us and we've had a couple of customers wait a few days longer than that. Please understand that we cannot control the Post Office, so we can't guarantee a delivery time. If the item does not arrive by the last promised ship date in ebay, please email us and let us know, and we will make it right. The only unhappy customers we have are those that don't bother to contact us and don't give us a chance to fix the problem for them. NON-USA CUSTOMERS: Same deal above, except your packages typically have been taking about 2 weeks or so after we ship them. We've noticed that maybe 20% of overseas customers have been waiting as long as 4+ weeks for these shipments. The only explanation we can come up with is that it must be stuck in some container in some dock waiting on customs clearance. It happens, and for those 20% of customers, we apologize, but there is very little we can do about that. Your disk will arrive or we will replace it. Multiple items purchased by the same customer may or may not be shipped in the same package, at our discretion. We do not offer any additional discounts on multiple items other than the ones noted above. Every effort has been made to accurately describe the contents of this collection. On very very rare occasions, typographical errors may occur and we may make an innocent mistake. These items are described to the very best of our abilities, and in as much detail as possible. Feedback Policy: Please offer us a chance to fix any problems before leaving us negative feedback for any reason by emailing us first with your problem. The only thing we ask from our customers is that if they have a problem, that they give us a chance to fix the problem for them before they leave bad feedback. If negative feedback is left without any prior communication, we will assume you are no longer interested in communicating and working things out. We verify all disks prior to shipment to ensure 100% customer satisfaction. If you have any questions prior to bidding, please use contact the seller above and let us know. Thank you!!!!!!
