Description: This is an original communist East Germany Cold War Medal for Faithful Service as a reserve in the National People's Army (NVA) Reserve. The medal was awarded to soldiers for faithful service and came in three types based on service length, as indicated below: - Bronze: for service of 18-24 months - Silver: for service of 2 to 10 years - Gold: for service of 10+ years It was issued during the dates 1968 to 1989. East Germany, referred to as the German Democratic Republic (GDR), officially became a country in 1949 following an impasse between the western allies (USA, Britain, & France) and communist Russia, splitting Germany into two nations. They remained an independent nation for 41 years until 1990, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. DESCRIPTION: Silver-colored measuring (approximately) 1 3/8" (3.5 cm). Obverse: A head of an NVA soldier w/two crossed oak leaf branches connected in the center an acorn, directly below the solider's head. Encircling the solider is the inscription, "Reservist of the National People's Army". The corresponding clasp consists of two overlapping triangles in the East German state colors. The central red triangle is bordered w/two oak leaf branches embossed in the center w/the GDR coat of arms & the NVA acronym. Reverse: Centered, the state coat of arms of the GDR surrounded by the inscription, "For the Protection of Workers' and Farmers' power" of which, are additionally encircled by a laurel branch.
