Description: Rare Coxon Belleek Saucer 1927-1931, D 1009 GE. Smooth edge shape with everted rim. Foliated flowers pattern in outline transfer painted by hand in color enamels featuring swags and garlands of brightly colored flowers in shades of orange, yellow, pinkish purple, and red around the border surrounding a central bouquet of flowers with foliage in colors of pinkish purple, blue, orange, and red on the saucer. "Coxon Belleek" back stamp of Coxon Belleek Pottery, Wooster, Ohio. An elegant pattern of very fine American Belleek porcelain. "The quality of Coxon Belleek is considered as fine as any American Belleek... Coxon was quite expensive for the times...Prices for Coxon Belleek are high today. Examples are scarce due to the short time of production" (p.45, Gaston's American Belleek (1984). Excellent condition. Looks virtually unused. No damage of any kind. No chips, cracks, hairlines, nor restorations. I did not notice any paint loss but this is a highly detailed pattern and there may be some extremely minor paint loss or fading due to age and stacking over the years, see photos for detail. The saucer measures approximately 5 3/4" in diameter Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The back stamp on the saucers is the Coxon Belleek mark above "Made Expressly for John Wanamaker, New York, N.Y. Wanamaker's department store was the first department store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and one of the first department stores in the United States. His retail advertisements—the first to be copyrighted beginning in 1874—were factual, and promises made in them were kept. Wanamaker guaranteed the quality of his merchandise in print, allowed his customers to return purchases for a cash refund and offered the first restaurant to be located inside a department store. Wanamaker also invented the price tag. Innovation and "firsts" marked Wanamaker's. The store was the first department store with electrical illumination (1878), first store with a telephone (1879), and the first store to install pneumatic tubes to transport cash and documents (1880). I have several of these saucers in comparable condition so the one you receive may vary slightly from the one pictured.
