Crinum Lily, Asiaticum (species), large, near blooming size bulb - NEW

Description: DESCRIPTION: Crinum asiaticum is a fairly common species used in landscapping in the Southeast United States and other places that have temperate climates, zone 8 and above. These are offset bulbs and will require about 1-2 more years of growth before reaching a blooming size. These grow to some of the largest crinum bulbs, when mature, in our collection of over 1000 crinum varieties. They typically grow 3-4 feet tall and start to bloom late in the spring and continue until late fall or freezing weather arrives. In warmer climates they bloom year round and can grow larger. This can actually be grow as an aquatic, in a pond. Asiaticum form seeds easily and usually form some seeds without any assistance. Over time they will form massive clumps. They will divide or form small, offset bulbs, but primarily they multiply by dropping seeds which lay on the surface before sending down a bulb and forming leaves. Flowers are fragrant. We have had scapes up to 5' tall with as many as 32 flowers. The flowers open sequentially with several open at one time over a 7-10 day period. The scape is strong and erect and only flops over after it is finished blooming. These bulbs can live for decades, and this particular bulb will be a prize in your collection in a few years. BACKGROUND: Asiaticum (fertile species) (St. John’s Lily, Poison Bulb) large, white bloom similar to ‘splendens’ but this foliage is light green with strap-like leaves, forms seeds occasionally without hand pollination. Old homesites often have lush plantings of these positively enormous Crinums. They develop huge necks topped with broad, green, spear-shaped leaves. Stout stems hold foliage in a stiffened rosette, which spreads like a big, succulent agave. Their natural range extends across the Indo-Pacific, and they are popular plants in the Asian tropics. The big, green seeds float and have spread from island to island. Mariners brought this bulb to the Gulf and Caribbean in the sixteenth century where they got their name, St. John’s lilies. GROWING CONDITIONS: This bulb will thrive in full sun and needs good draining soil. Here in northeast FL, zone 9, it starts blooming in May and continues until fall. The leaves stay green all year. It is very hardy and easy to grow requiring no special care. It will tolerate extended dry periods and will take freezing temperatures at least down to the high teens. Crinum bulbs will survive very long periods out of the ground if left to dry properly. This would make an excellent container plant in colder climates. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on one (1) large, near blooming size offset bulb (removed from a larger plant). They are about 1-2 years from blooming and are approximately 2+" in diameter with leaves about 24" long (during growing season). The roots are well developed, so it should transplant easily.
