Description: DESCRIPTION: Kenya King is our exclusive bulb which we named. We are one of only a few growers in the world that have it, and probably the only one with it for sale. As you can see, it has LOTS of very beautiful, dark pink, trumpet-shaped flowers with strong scapes (stems). It's still a bit of a mystery to us but is a very desirable bulb. Quantities are very limited, since it does not offset very rapidly. It is being introduced on eBay for the first time in 2014. Since we started growing it in 2001, we have only had 1 seed, but we are inclined to believe that it is a species bulb. The flowers are very fragrant and we have observed as many as 26 flowers on scapes up to 46" tall. This is one of the highest flower counts of any crinum we grow. We have recorded blooms in January - June, and December. Our largest bulbs have measured 5" in diameter. We grow over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: We purchased Kenya King from a grower in South Africa. He tells the story that this bulb was collected in the wild in Kenya by a friend who had to bribe the customs agent with $100 to get it out of the country. The friend identified it as crinum kirkii, but this collector soon realized it was not the species kirkii and thinks it is a tropical African moorei (a species). We are just not sure, but know it is unique to anything else in our large collection. It looks much like a powellii hybrid, the the leaves are more like moorei. GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Kenya King does fine with our mild freezes into the 20's here northeast Florida, zone 9. We have no way of knowing how it will do in cooler temperature, since it has never been distributed before. We guess it will survive outside to zone 7, but if you are below zone 8, we recommend growing it in a pot and protecting it from freezes until you have a smaller offset bulb that you can "experiment" with outside. If you do plant one outside in zone 7 we recommend mulching it very heavily in the winter and planting it below the level that the ground freezes. They are an easy to grow bulb requiring no special care...just plant and forget, like most crinum. It tolerates a wide range of soils but prefers rich soil. Bulbs can survive nicely out of the ground for very long periods if allowed to dry. Like most crinum they prefer full sun, but partial shade is OK. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a Large, blooming-size bulb at least 4 years old and about 3" in diameter which should bloom within 1 year. They don't like being disturbed, so it could take one year to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive. The photos show the plant in various stages of growth. Please feel free to contact us for additional information, and click on "Me" following our star rating.
