All detailed with the owner Arthur Somers' monogram 'S.' We are pleased to present this collection of monogrammed silverware from the estate of Arthur Somers. Engraved with an 'S' the set consists of 6 butter pads, 6 salt/pepper shakers, and 5 matchbook covers. Arthur Sylvester Somers (1866-1932) Starting from nothing, Arthur S. Somers made a fortune in the dry color and paint business at Lavenburg Paint, and rose to prominence in his Brooklyn community. He was a well-known and beloved philanthropist, known to drive through the streets of Brooklyn at Christmas time, handing out silver dollars to the children who ran up to his car. His interests ranged from commerce to labor, from education to politics. He served as President of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, served on the Brooklyn Mass Transit (BMT) Board, and as Commissioner and President of the Brooklyn Board of Education. The Arthur S. Somers Intermediate School 252 was named in honor of his contributions to education. Education was perhaps the thing most dear to his heart. His writing and speeches stressed the importance of a good education, and of the need to train teachers. The matchbook covers are 1 5/8 inches long by 1 1/8 inches wide, and are 3/8 of an inch thick. The shakers are 1 1/8 inches high and have diameters of 1/2 inch. The butter pads have a diameter of 2 5/8 inches. The set weighs 6.6 ounces. Being antiques, these items are in good to very good condition. They are all tarnished and in need of polishing. The sides of the match covers originally had some paper decorations on their sides, but this has long since started to disintegrate. This does not affect the integrity of the covers, however. For collectors of unique, customized and monogrammed silver, this set is a great historical find.
