Description: [zipedit] DenmarkPublicity Poster Stamp Issued in 1912 as publicity for the IOGT (Independent Order of Good Templars) in Denmark, by the Propaganda Committee for the Aarhus lodge, for 1913. According to Wikipedia: The International Organisation of Good Templars (IOGT; founded as the Independent Order of Good Templars), whose international body is known as Movendi International, is a fraternal organization which is part of the temperance movement, promoting abstinence from alcohol and other drugs. It describes itself as "the premier global interlocutor for evidence-based policy measures and community-based interventions to prevent and reduce harm caused by alcohol and other drugs". It claims to be the largest worldwide community of non-governmental organisations with a mission to independently enlighten people around the world on a lifestyle free from alcohol and other drugs. IOGT International works to promote the avoidance of alcohol and other drugs by supporting communities and societies around the world. Founded in 1851, their constitution claims that this will lead to the liberation of peoples of the world, this leading to a richer, freer and more rewarding life. Today the headquarters of IOGT International are situated in Stockholm. History of the IOGT in Denmark In mid-February 1880, an advertisement was placed in Berlingske Tidende, inviting people to discuss the abstention cause and the establishment of IOGT in Denmark. Barely 20 men and a single woman showed up in the white hall of the Hotel d'Angleterre. Carl Frederik Balle, who was admitted to the Order in Norway, informed those present about the order and its purpose. Subsequently, on March 13, 1880, the order was founded in Denmark at a meeting on Gammelholmen, and the lodge was named Tempelherren, lodge no. 1. The 32-year-old doctor Henrik Selmer, became the lodge's supreme temple. Shortly afterwards, the lodge's first female member was admitted. The 41-year-old Miss Lene Blauenfeldt was on Easter vacation with her brother-in-law, Niels Amandus Thorsen, who was one of the 13 co-founders of the Temple Lord. Shortly after her return to Vejle , she established IOGT's second lodge, which was named Jacob Molay. The high admission and membership fees made it possible to get lodge rooms and already in 1882 there were 13 IOGT lodges around Denmark. The lodges lacked a supremacy and after obtaining the necessary powers, Denmark's IOGT Grand Lodge was founded on 28 August 1882. The connection with the world lodge had so far been maintained through Norway; but the lodges now became, through the Grand Lodge, an independent link of the order. Since the founding of IOGT Denmark's Grand Lodge, there have been IOGT's construction companies, boarding houses, free homes, singing associations, savings associations, sports associations, insurance companies, etc. The last lodge housed in an IOGT property is the Hope of the Future, located at Norgesgade 23, Esbjerg. This stamp was printed in sheets of 25 stamps (5x5) with full margins allaround, and it depicts a Viking sailing ship with a rising sun in the background. It is listed in A. Hartvigsen's "Illustreret Katalog 1885-1920 over Jule-, Velgørenheds- og Foreningsmærker samt Udstillings- og Lejlighedsmærker fra Danmark, Island, Dansk Vestindien, Sønderjylland, Norge, Sverige og Finland", as: 1912 #8. This example is a F/VF single, OG, NH. Approximate Image Size: 26½ x 40½ mm. * STOCK IMAGE DUE TO RECENT NON-DELIVERY CLAIMS - EXTRA FEES FOR SHIPPING MAY BE REQUIRED FOR SOME ADDRESSES. After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such). Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs. A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described. * A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
