Collectors value these editions for their clarity, low surface noise and preservation of the original sound. "Descent into the Maelstrom" is a composition by the innovative jazz pianist Lennie Tristano, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story A Descent into the Maelström. This avant-garde jazz piece is one of Tristano’s most ambitious and experimental works, showcasing his forward-thinking approach to jazz in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It is considered one of the earliest examples of free jazz, a genre that would only fully emerge a decade later with musicians like Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane. It abandons traditional harmonic and rhythmic structures, allowing for spontaneous improvisation and pushing the boundaries of jazz composition. "Descent into the Maelstrom" is not bound by conventional chord progressions or time signatures, making it highly experimental for its time, and in my opinion is the definition of Avant Garde Jazz! His explorations of dissonance, rhythm, and harmonic freedom - "Descent into the Maelstrom" is a shining example of his genius. It stands as a landmark in the evolution of jazz, particularly for its early use of free improvisation and its break from traditional jazz conventions. This is a virtually brand new album, purchsed many years ago when it was released on the East Wind label from Japan. Pressed on virgin vinyl, it is a VERY quiet recording, dynamic now highly collectible! This copy has only been partially played by me, ONE TIME.
