Description: The Design Acoustics D-8 speakers in this listing are i very good overall condition. The real oiled walnut veneer is in near mint condition. I recently treated these with Howard Feed-N-Wax Wood Polish & Conditioner. The beautiful grain patterns indicate exceptional quality real wood veneer. I bought these from the original owner who purchased them around 1979-1981. An additional Peerless paper cone tweeter was added to the D-8 from 1979-1981. Each speaker went from three Peerless paper cone tweeters to four Peerless paper cone tweeters per speaker. Two of these paper cone tweeters are 1.75" and two are 2.5," without the round metal mounting flanges. These tweeters are very similar to the Alnico magnet Peerless tweeters used in vintage McIntosh, Dynaco, ESS, Electro-Voice, SONAB, and many other speakers. They are very smooth sounding with a very flat impedance curve. Each speaker also has a Peerless 1" silk dome tweeter that appears to be similar to the Peerless MT-4115-8 one inch silk dome tweeter used in most of the early Polk monitors, and many other speakers. There is a 2.25" paper cone piezo tweeter firing up at an apx.45-degree angle. The midrange is a 5" Peerless paper cone midrange, 3.5" to the edge of the foam surround without the mounting flange. The foam is in like new condition, indicating the surrounds have most likely been replaced at some point. The earlier versions of the D-8 had one active 10" Woofer and one 10" passive radiator. The D-8 pair listed definitely has two active woofers per speaker. The rubber surrounds are all pliable and have retained appropriate compliance. The grill covers are original and in very good, clean condition. These are from a smoke free, pet free environment. The D-8 is considered by many who have written reviews to be the best speaker ever made by Design Acoustics. The D-8 sounds very balanced, cohesive, and smooth. Very non-fatiguing, yet accurate and transparent. The bass is tight, realistic, and palpable. The low frequences couple with the room even at relatively low volume levels. They go down to 25 Hz or lower with room reinforcement. The D-8 is easy to drive at 94.5 dB, 1watt/ at 1 Meter and sounds full even at low volume levels. Transients and decay are well balanced. The soundstage is spacious, and the imaging is very good. I am designing and building my own speakers now, but I have yet to design and build anything better than the D-8. These will pleasantly surprise you in every way. and they look fantastic. I prefer the appearance without the grill covers. These are very rare, especially in this condition.
