Description: Hello & welcome to our eBay store. So here's the deal. Light In The Attic was going through a bunch of stock at their old warehouse space in Seattle in preparation for relocating their warehousing to San Diego. While doing this they came across several pallets of mystery boxes. In some of these boxes they found the unassembled parts for Reachin' including the outer cover, the printed inner sleeves, and both records. There were enough parts to assemble several sets and they sold them all to us. This landmark album was originally released in the early 90s on vinyl but with all the music crammed onto a single slab of vinyl. As any audiophile knows the bass for hip hop recordings needs room for the grooves to breathe in order to get that nice deep, speaker vibrating, low end (can't get enough of everlasting bass, indeed). If you cram too much onto a record side it sounds thin and weak, definitely nothing to get all twerked up about. Light In The Attic rectified this inequity by expanding it to two thick slabs of audiophile grade vinyl and mastering it from the best available sources, all with the direct participation and blessing of the members of Digable Planets! You might see some other cheaper priced double vinyl pressings currently on eBay however if they don't have the "Modern Classics Recordings" or "Universal Music Special Markets" logos on them they aren't legit. They are not pressed from the same master recordings, they will not sound that great and perhaps worst of all, the members of Digable Planets don't get compensated for them! By the way these are mostly on black vinyl but there were a few purple/blue color records that were found in the boxes and these will be randomly inserted into orders. Of course, if you're preference is black vinyl only just let us know and we'll make sure that is what you get. Digable Planets’ 1993 debut, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), unexpected to all involved, produced a massive radio hit in “Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)”, which won the 1994 Grammy for Best Rap Performance by Duo or Group. Unduly lumped into an “alternative rap” subgenre they chafed at, the Dig Plans were dismissed by some as one-hit wonders, coming out of nowhere; but the Digable Planets concept, and what became Reachin’, had been in the works for close to five years, as group leader Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler wrote music and soaked up game in multiple cities, navigating the industry of hip-hop’s golden age. In the end, Butler, Mary Anne “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira, and Craig “Doodlebug” Irving came together to create a seamlessly articulated vision of urbane hiphop cool with an uncommonly literary bent that subtly pushed the hip-hop genre’s frames of reference and added breadth to rap music’s burgeoning political philosophy. Drawing on inspiration from Butler’s jazzbo father, the Black Panthers, Jose Luis-Borges, the Last Poets, and Jimi Hendrix, Reachin’ posited a theory of “universal beats”, narrated by three unearthly MC’s that had “split to Earth to resurrect the funk”, assuming curious, arthropodic aliases—a nod to the natural collective action of the insect world. In just four years the crew would record two beloved and ambitious LPs before disbanding. Out of print on wax domestically since 1993, Reachin’ captures one of the last gasps of rap music’s jazzy, upbeat adolescence in the early 90’s—those warm, blissed-out grooves every bit as slick as when they were laid way back when.
