Description: Documentary History of Constitution of the USA, 3 vols. 1894/1900 Documentary History of the Constitution of the United States of America 1786-1870. Derived from the Records, Manuscripts, and Rolls Deposited in the Bureau of Rolls and Library of the Department of State. Washington: Department of State, 1894, 1894, 1900. Three volumes. Pages v, 385; iv, 897; xiv, 904. Ca. 8 ½” x 12”; a very heavy set printed with wide margins that weighs in at almost 19 pounds! Hardbound. A critical resource for students of U.S. history and government, this set is complete in three volumes. In the words of the Introductory Note with which the first volume opens, “The design of this work is to give a literal print of the documents deposited in the Bureau of Rolls and Library of the Department of State relating to the formation of the Constitution of the United States as adopted, amended, and now in force. The narrative, therefore, begins with the record of the proceedings of the Annapolis Convention,… The purpose in view being to avoid controversy and to meet the demands of historical scholars and students by presenting the contents of the papers themselves. The editorial function is confined to the general form of the text, and such notes as may be indispensable to clear display.” Good vintage condition with wear commensurate with age and use, including scuffs and knicks to the bindings, previous owner’s name on the front flyleaf, folds and losses to the corners of several pages, and weaknesses to the bindings of the (very large) volumes, which nonetheless still hold and remain eminently suitable for use. A must-have for scholars of the subject. Please note that postage reflects that this set weighs almost 19 pounds before wrapping!
