Description: 34th President. Envelope hand-addressed by Eisenhower as newly named Supreme Allied Commander Europe (while on a leave as President of Columbia University). He has addressed it to his wife at center: Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower 60 Morningside Drive New York City, N.Y. U.S.A. He has also added his return address at top left: Low Library Columbia University, New York City D.D.E. It’s interesting to note that this envelope was actually mailed from Denmark given the stamps and postal markings. The postmark dates it to January 12, 1951. Eisenhower was named Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) in December 1950. A distinguished military record, combined with his good working relations with many of the European leaders, made Eisenhower the ideal choice for the position of SACEUR. Eisenhower considered it the most important military job in the world and took a leave of absence as President of Columbia University to head the fledging Alliance. Eisenhower set about on a tour of the European capitals in January 1951 to raise morale and convince the war weary countries that bolstering their defenses was necessary. It was not an easy task. The Europeans felt that the NATO Treaty ensured that the USA would not desert them. They deemed the threat of the American atomic bomb enough to deter the Soviet Union. Therefore, it was not necessary to build up European ground strength as it would do nothing in the face of atomic war and would only provoke the Soviets. Thanks for looking :)
