The city passed into the hands of the Greek rulers of Cyrenaica in Africa and later fell to Carthage. It became a Roman colony named Regio Syrtica that in the 3rd century was renamed Regio Tripolitania (region of 3 cities: Oea, Sabratha and Lepis Magna). It is interesting to note that the history of the city does not match with the fact that this coin, minted in 15 AD carries the name Tripoli. The region declined after the Fall of the Roman Empire and was taken by Muslims in 642 who renamed it Tralbus. It was then ruled by Fatamids, Mamluks, Almohads and Hafsids before falling to the Ottomans. In 1510 it was taken by the Spanish and assigned to the Kingdom of St John before falling again to the Ottomans in 1551 when it became a base of operations for the Barbary pirates. In 1711, Ahmed killed the Ottoman governor and made himself head of the Karamanli Dynasty that lasted until 1835 when again it became Ottoman. It was annexe by Italy in 1911 and fell to the British 8th Army in 1943 before gaining its independence as part of Libya in 1951. The US made major bombing raids in 1986 against Libya under Muammar Gaddafi.Important events in the year 98 BC: Consulship of Nepos and Didius; Senate passes resolution forbidding human sacrifice; Births: Nigidius Figulus, Roman Philosopher; Deaths: Emperor Kaika of JapanOTHER COINS DATED 98 BC: ALEXANDRIA PTOLEMY X RY17 1148 ARADOS TETRADRACHM EOA162 705 BITHYNIA NICOMEDES III TETRADRACHM BE200 498 CAPPADOCIA ARIARATHES VIII RY3 DRACHM 523 ARIARATHES IX 524 PTOLEMY IX RY20 TETRADRACHM PAPHOS 1140 SALAMIS 1142 SELEUKIA TETRADRACHM SLE12 347 AE21 351 SIDON TETRADRACHM EOS14 870 AE14 877 AE17 884 TYRE SHEKEL EOT 29 946 AE21 961
