Description: Early/mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Marion Ronald - 1846. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with a small flower at the end of certain rows, with the E.R at the end of the third row and J.R at the end of the last row. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a large central two storey house with a bird and heart between its central towers and a flower beside each chimney. The left side wall of the house has a fruit tree, dog, fruit basket and bird beside it with the initials D.R above whilst the linen to the right of the house is stitched with a fruit tree, floral urn, fruit basket and bird, the later with the initials S.C above and the fruit basket with a heart above. Marion's name and the date of September 1846 run across the bottom edge of the linen, then the whole piece is surrounded by a zigzag border, mostly obscured by the slip of the frame. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with patches of staining. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is a stitch loss to the roof of the house and a few smaller areas elsewhere. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip both of which are in good condition. The slip has age related rubbing and a small loss to the lower left corner revealing the gesso beneath the gilding whilst the frame has scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and a small, old loss to the veneer on all four corners.
