"Miss Lee" was a 28-year-old Nelle Harper Lee, born and raised in Monroeville, a small town of 7,000 people in southwest Alabama. Set in Maycomb, nine-year-old Jean Louise Finch---"Scout"---lives with her attorney father, Atticus Finch, her brother Jem, who is thirteen, and her friend, Dill who spends the summers in Maycomb---"an old town, but it was a tired town when i knew it. in rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalk, the courthouse sagged in the square. . . Somehow it was hotter then. . ." Scout captures a world in painful yet necessary transition out of the illusions of the past. She and Jem and Dill play childhood games with a "sack swing" in the yard and an old rubber tire they roll down the dirt street. All three children are highly imaginative---especially concerning their reclusive neighbor, BOO RADLEY. Atticus teaches the children to respect their neighbors---the RADLEYS, MISS DUBOSE, MISS STEPHANIE CRAWFORD, MISS RAINEY and Mr. Avery. Atticus also teaches Scout and Jem to accept the CUNNINGHAMS---who can only pay Atticus by bringing him turnips or a load of wood. The children are considerate and kind to their Negro maid, CALPURNIA. Scout questions why her teacher does not want her reading with her father and getting ahead of the other students. Scout is a "tomboy," preferring overalls to dresses and she enjoys "fist fighting" with boys at recess. When Atticus Finch agreed to defend a Negro, TOM ROBINSON, who is accused of raping a white girl, MAYELLA EWELL, Scout and Jem and Dill sneak into the crowded Maycomb Courthouse where they sit in the balcony with the Negroes. When the jury reaches a verdict and find Tom's guilty, the courtroom cheers and slowly departs; however, the Negroes stand, and in the most dramatic scene in the novel, the negro minister tells Scout to stand up: "Your father is passing!" Later Mr. Ewell tries to hurt Scout and Jem when they are returning from a Halloween party in costume, but BOO RADLEY saves the children. "To Kill a Mockingbird" is an unforgettable novel of wisdom, humanity, passion, and humor, an evocative book of another era but relevant to our own times--an American classic. The book---dedicated to her father and her sister--won the Pulitzer Prize. Time has not diminished the novel's popularity---the book has sold over 15 million copies in thirteen countries. 296 pages.
