Description: This is a top quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Sovereign Case. The case has delicate engraved scroll decoration across the back and front with a blank cartouche in the centre of the front. Inside it has a spring loaded coin holder with engine turned decoration on the top. The sovereign case was made in Birmingham by famous case makers Dennison, Wigley & Co and dates to 1902. Founded by Aaron Lufkin Dennison in 1876, the firm specialised in watch cases and sovereign cases and were one of the very best at both. In 1879 they merged with Alfred Wigley’s watch case company to form Dennison, Wigley & Co. In 1906 they became the Dennison Watch Case Co and remained in business until the mid 1960s. Condition is very good, with no dings or dents to the case and just a small catch to the rim of the coin holder plus the overall superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 120 years of good service. The hinge and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs as these form part of the description. The sovereign holder is 5cm / 1.9ins from ring to hinge, 3.4cm / 1.3ins in diameter and 1.3cm / 0.51ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 29.2g / 1.03oz of solid Sterling Silver. The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and A.L.D makers' mark for Dennison, Wigley & Co.
