Description: Vaccaro, an Italian-American GI and photojournalist, took more than 10,000 photos while in Germany from 1944-1949. The selection reproduced here, in good-quality plates, is grouped into the four themes of liberation, occupation, reconstruction, and life in peace. Vaccaro provides an introduction, commentary, captions, and a short biography (each in English, German and French). A quality book, which Taschen has been long reputed for. His photos are very raw and spontaneous, fairly rare, as he was both a combat soldier and, technically illegal, photographer, as he was not an official war correspondent. He clearly had an eye for composition, and later in life became a professional photographer. If Ernie Pyle were a photographer, he'd be Vaccaro. The book covers the closing days of the western front in WW2, as well as the first years post-war, and amazingly his photos capture the ethos of the film, Germany Year Zero. He passed away recently, but video documentaries on him showed him vigorous and energetic into his mid-90s, a life well lived. Between fighting a desperate enemy and wanting to record what he saw, the author bravely captured some of the most historical and gripping pictures of World War II. He led a fascinating life. Great book. Very minor shelf wear only. Looks unread. All pages clean and unmarked.
