Description: Esquire Magazine for May 1937. 250 pages plus covers. Measures about 10 1/4" x 14". Staple-bound. We'll be up-front: this issue is in rough condition. The lower right corner is severely worn. The covers are still attached but barely hanging on. There is soiling to the front cover as well as fold/abrasion marks. So why buy this, even at the low price of $9.99? Answer: two important articles. The first, on page 50, is The Painted Mirror, a horror story by Donald Wandrei (1908-1987). Wandrei was a friend and colleague of H.P. Lovecraft and, with August Derleth, co-founded the fantasy/horror publisher Arkham House. Wandrei published fourteen stories in Weird Tales, another sixteen in Astounding Stories, plus a few in other magazines -- including this little-noticed contribution to Esquire. Wandrei also contributed two stories to the Cthulhu Mythos: "The Fire Vampires" (1933) and "The Tree-Men of M'Bwa" (1933). Much of the editorial work on Lovecraft's Selected Letters series (published by Arkham House in five volumes between 1964 and 1976) was performed by Wandrei. The second important article, on page 87, is by Harry Salpeter on Ashcan-school standout artist William Glackens. It is illustrated by five of Glackens' then-recent paintings. If you are a fan of Lovecraft -- or Glackens -- you will want this as a "reader's copy" containing these notable contributions. If not, you may still want to read the other articles by Stephen Vincent Benet, Fletcher Pratt, Gilbert Seldes, George Jean Nathan, etc. without worrying that you might damage the magazine by folding or dropping it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
