Description: This mask is from Western Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso of the Ivory Coast. It measures 18” in height by 18” in width by 11” in depth. It shows wear consistent with age and use. The colors and geometric shapes are archetypal for masks from this area. The Bobo and Bwa are distinct peoples but hold some aspects of their religion in common. They are one of the few peoples in Western Africa who have mostly resisted foreign culture and continue to practice their traditional religions, so traditional masks such as this are still used in ceremonies. This old tribal used mask is in good weathered condition, showing wear, chips and cracks on the edges and high points from use. This beautifully styled BWA Ram mask from Burkina Faso, the BWA people, also known as Bobo Ule, carve masks which represent protective bush spirits. The masks are painted with a clay based paint. During ceremonies, highly skilled dancers wear these masks. Ceremonies are performed on various occasions which include initiations, harvests and funerals.
