GREY GOOSE

Extraordinary Jesse Burkett Signed Inscribed STAT Baseball JSA COA HOF Dec. 1953

Description: We look at the idea of "batting .400" as one of baseball's most unattainable accomplishments. And rightly so, as no one has done it since 1941, with very few even coming close. Remarkably, three Hall of Famers have reached the fabled plateau three times, each achieving this almost-impossible goal during three seasons. They did it in small, fiercely competitive leagues, under harsh conditions of travel, lodging and physical care. And, they did it against an undiluted pool of pitching talent (well-equipped with spitballers!). The trio of legends on this short list, which is very unlikely to ever lengthen, are Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, and Jesse Burkett. Cobb and Hornsby, revered as they are, are nevertheless familiar to us. Our feeling of contemporary acquaintanceship with these two men, by virtue of biographies, newspaper accounts and, of course, their baseball cards, doesn't diminish their stature. But it does isolate Burkett, who played in an earlier time, and it emphasizes the rarity of his memorabilia. By way of perspective, Burkett retired (from his 16 years of ballplaying, in more than 2,000 Major League games) four years prior to the release of T206 baseball cards. He passed away in 1953, decades before the advent of anything resembling the organized hobby of today. Presented is a phenomenal signed baseball of this great player from another era. This Official National League baseball, has been signed twice by Jesse Burkett in black fountain pen. Burkett has written the years and averages for which he is best remembered. He has placed precise column titles reading, "Bat" and "Ave," and below has listed, "1895 421 - 1896 410 - 1901 401."These are numbers that provoke incredulity, and irresistibly inspire thoughts of baseball's distant past and its wonders. On another panel he signed again and inscribed: “Four Bunts, Beat All-Bret 1 Game.” Also signed at a later date by two other players. There are few examples extant, of a Burkett signed baseball from the third member of one of baseball's most exclusive "clubs," and this is one of the finest of those few. An outstanding ball, and the future showpiece of an advanced collection of single signed Hall of Fame baseballs.Comes with full letter JSA COA. D#A8 Welcome to Showpieces Sports.
