Description: Fockea edulis A sensational caudiciform with twisted tuberous roots and thin climbing branches. The tuber is gray and warty and, in nature, can grow to 2' wide! The thin branches grow over 12' long with green, oval leaves that are narrow and to 1" long. In winter the plants rarely go completely dormant and leafless, and in spring the new growth quickly forms and begins blooming, with 1/2" greenish yellow stars that continue well into the fall. Plants are dioecious - meaning that male and female flowers are on separate plants. Fockea are easy to grow in very bright filtered light, and need protection from hot mid-day sun. The plants should be watered well and allowed to dry completely between waterings. In winter, keep mostly dry - watering just enough to keep the foliage that is still present going. The vining stems will require some sort of support or trellis on which to climb. The plants being offered have been grown hard, rather than soft and fast. The plants have been growing in an unheated greenhouse, with winter nighttime temperatures that dip into the mid 30s. In winter, keep them almost completely dry, at which time they will lose much of their foliage. In spring the new vines begin, and flowering commences in mid to late summer. Please note that warmer temperatures in the winter would be happily accepted and, with warmer temperatures, the vines are usually evergreen. I use a low nitrogen fertilizer for all of my succulents, but if you would like to increase the size of the tubers quickly, you can use a higher nitrogen fertilizer. Also, the plants may be potted-up a little higher with each transplanting, to expose and bring out the shape and uniqueness of the tuber (caudex). The specific epithet, "edulis" is Latin for "edible" - referring to the fleshy roots which were used for food and moisture in dry parts of South Africa - which is kind of strange... considering the roots are filled with white sap that is considered poisonous. This offering is for the actual plant shown in the photo - it will be shipped bareroot. It is currently dormant and without foliage, and it's a good time for shipping! *What is not seen in the photo is that the tuber goes well down into its pot! This offering is for one well-rooted and established, 4 year-old seedling plant in a 3 1/4" pot. Shipped in pot. The exact plants shown in the last photo. I've been growing and collecting exotic plants for nearly 50 years, and take great pride in what I grow and sell. All photos are of plants in my own collection - unless stated otherwise.
