Description: Ernest Rancoulet was a French sculptor best known for his Neoclassical bronze figures of mythological creatures, society women, and athletes. Rancoulet participated in the Paris Salon for several years, regularly exhibiting his elegant figurines and portrait busts. His practice was distinct for his affinity for working in pairs, often casting two varying copies of the same subject intended to be displayed side by side, as seen in his Pair of Bronze Figures of Victorian Women. The sculptor also frequently inscribed mythical verse onto his works, notably including Ovid's Metamorphoses. Born in Bordeaux, France in 1870, Rancoulet's life and career was prolific but short, ending with his death in 1915.This beautiful girl is made of spelter, not uncommon. I suspect that she had a repair on her left arm, around her elbow, but it has been masterfully and almost imperceptibly restored.
