Gardenia jasminoides is an evergreen perennial shrub in the Rubiaceae family. Its native range is Indo-China to southcentral and southern Japan. Familiar names include Cape Jasmine, Common Gardenia, and Gandharaj. In the Coffee family, this shrub is a very famous shrub from the 1700s with several paintings found with the double flowers. It can grow to around 10 feet tall in the wild but is usually cut back to 5-7 feet tall. The glossy opposite leaves are 10" long and 3" wide. The white flowers are matte textures and will fade to yellow gradually. They are large flowers, 4 inches in diameter, loosely doubled forms. The fragrant is among the strongest of any flowers on the earth. The flowers follow the small oval fruits. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 8-11 Germination Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly tamp down. Cover with plastic and poke two tiny pin holes to keep seeds from rotting. Keep temperatures around 75-80F. Keep moist in a bright spot. Germination is in 30-60 days.
