Description: It was one of the most memorable, if not most controversial regular-season games in baseball history. On July 24th, 1983, George Brett and the Kansas City Royals were at venerable Yankee Stadium to take on the New York Yankees. With the Yankees up 4-3 in the top of the 9th inning and Hall of Famer Goose Gossage on the mound, Hall of Famer George Brett stepped up with two outs and a runner on third base. Brett turned on a Gossage fastball and launched it into the right-field seats to give the Royals what appeared to be a 5-4 lead. After Brett had already touched home plate, Yankees’ manager Billy Martin thought Brett was using an illegal bat. After measuring the length of the pine tar on the bat and further discussions by the umpiring crew, home plate umpire, Tim McClelland pointed into the Royals dugout. He called Brett out for using an illegal bat, thus prompting a near melee at home plate in which Brett had to be restrained by several players, coaches, and other empires and ending the game with the Yankees winning 4-3. After filing an official protest, the umpires’ decision was ultimately overturned, and Brett’s home run stood. The game was resumed and completed on August 18th, with the Royals leading and ultimately winning 5-4. The presented ticket stub was for a “Field Level Box” and cost “$9.00.” The seating information and game date are located at the top of the stub. The midsection contains the “Rain Check” disclaimer, a “Day 52,” and a Yankees logo stamped in red. The stub comes encapsulated and graded “AUTHENTIC” by PSA (53805234).
