Description: In early 1840, some parts of the Imperial British Coinage Act, 1816 began to apply in New Zealand when the first Governor, Captain William Hobson extended British laws to the new colony. This allowed for the standard British gold, silver and bronze coins to circulate freely in New Zealand alongside a variety of foreign coins. In 1897, New Zealand's coins became subject to some parts of the Imperial Coinage Act 1870. This meant only British coin was the official legal tender in the colony. At the time, British coin was one of two ‘common' currencies, the other being Australian-minted gold sovereign and half sovereign coins. From 1914, gold coins gradually started to be withdrawn from circulation. Then in 1920, silver coin was debased from .925 fine sterling silver to .500 fine silver. In 1933, a unique New Zealand coinage was introduced, with British coin no longer legal tender from 1 February 1935.George V (George Frederick Ernest Albert 1865 – 1936) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936.The minting programme for the new design of currency started immediately. As a result of this gradual process, the old currency and the newly designed currency will circulate simultaneously as legal tender and of equal value for a long time, as it would be impractical to withdraw such a large amount of old money from circulation immediately.OBVERSE: Crowned bust of King George V left, legend around.Lettering: GEORGE V KING EMPEROREngraver: Percy MetcalfeREVERSE: Kiwi bird left, legend above, denomination and date below.Lettering: NEW·ZEALAND ONE·FLORIN·1935 KGEngraver: George Kruger GrayEDGE: ReededDesigner : "KG" - George Edward Kruger Gray CBE (1880-1943), was British artist and designerMint: Royal Mint Tower Hill, London, United KingdomMintage in 1933 2 100 000Country New Zealand King George V (1910-1936)Type Standard circulation coinYears 1933-1936Value 1 Florin Currency Pound (1840-1967)Composition Silver (.500)Weight 11.31 gDiameter 28.58 mmThickness 2.2 mmShape RoundOrientation Medal alignment ↑↑Demonetized 31 October 2006References KM#4
