Description: GERARD HOFFNUNG: HOFFNUNGSLOS CARTOONS 1968 PB SINGLE PANEL COMICS IN GERMAN RARE This charming estate find 55-year-old paperback is 100% in German language and printed in Germany. Spine is straight but original glue has dried out. About first half of book detaches in a chunk. All pages are present, clean and unmarked. But care must be taken to read them. Publisher DTV used a very thin layer of clear film over the cover. See photos. Gerard Hoffnung (1925-1959) was an artist and musician, best known for his humorous works. Raised in Germany, Hoffnung was brought to London as a boy to escape the Nazis. Over the next two decades in England, he was a cartoonist, tuba player, impresario, broadcaster and raconteur. In 1956 Hoffnung mounted the first of his "Hoffnung Festivals" in London, at which classical music was spoofed for comic effect, with contributions from famous musicians. As a broadcaster he appeared on BBC panel games, where he honed material for one of his best-known performances, his speech at the Oxford Union in 1958. He died in 1959 at age 34 of a brain hemorrhage. Very few copies of this RARE BOOK are available for sale. I find only one or two in Europe. Shipped via USPS Ground Advantage, packed securely.
