Description: THIS IS A VERY RARE AMERICAN AESTHETIC MOVEMENT JAPANESE STYLE IRON & STERLING SILVER MIXED METALS BOX MADE IN 1883 BY GORHAM. GORHAM EXPERIMENTED WITH IRON AND ONLY PRODUCED IT IN 1883, SO IRON PIECES ARE FAIRLY RARE TO COME ACROSS. USUALLY YOU CAN ONLY FINE PIECES OR PARTS OF SMOKING SETS AND TEA KETTLES, COMPLETE STAND ALONE PIECES ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND. THE BODY OF THIS PIECE IS MADE OF IRON WITH TWO CAST JAPANESE MEN STANDING ON SANDY GROUND THROWING A BALL PLAYING CATCH. THE APPLIED FIGURES AND BALL ARE STERLING SILVER. THIS PIECE IS IN EXCELLENT ORIGINAL CONDITION WITH AN OUTSTANDING PATINA AND NICE ORIGINAL SURFACES. IT MEASURES ABOUT 4" x 3" AND HAS NEVER BEEN MONOGRAMED.
