This is a DVD of documentaries on the Battle of Midway, a crucial and decisive naval battle in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. Between 4 and 7 June 1942, only six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea, the United States Navy under Admirals Chester Nimitz, Frank Jack Fletcher, and Raymond A. Spruance decisively defeated an attacking fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy under Admirals Isoroku Yamamoto, Chuichi Nagumo, and Nobutake Kondo near Midway Atoll, inflicting devastating damage on the Japanese fleet that proved irreparable. Military historian John Keegan called it "the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare." It was Japan's first naval defeat since the Battle of Shimonoseki Straits in 1863. This DVD contains five movies: - Battle of Midway (US Navy) Made in 1942 and shot in color, "The Battle of Midway" is John Ford's masterpiece of documentary filmmaking.(which won a 1943 Oscar for Best Documentary) Featuring voice overs by Donald Crisp, Henry Fonda, and Jane Darwell, the film includes material shot by Ford himself during the Japanese bombardment of Midway. The film features operations of PBY Catalina flying boats as scouting aircraft, shots of the B-17s which operated off Midway during the battle, and the assault on Midway itself. At sea, the film shows the American aircraft carrier forces conducting flight operations and defending against Japanese aircraft. It also features precious footage of USS Hornet's Torpedo 8, which was decimated in the battle. Only one crewman, Ensign George Gay, survived the day. (18 min.) - Midway and Coral Sea Battles This short newsreel, produced for the home market, shows Japanese attacks on Australia, and the Battle of Coral Sea and Midway that turned the tide of the Pacific War. Footage of the Battle of Coral Sea includes shots of the aircraft carrier USS Lexington (CV-2) on fire and sinking after being hit by Japanese bombs. The film also includes footage of the aircraft carriers USS Yorktown, USS Saratoga, USS Enterprise and other warships, and shots of a Japanese cruiser (possibly Chickuma or Mikuma) on fire after the Battle of Midway. (9 min.) - United Newsreel A look at the pacific war in 1942; covers US troops movements into New Guinea, and Midway footage from the carrier Yorktown, which was the only American carrier lost at the battle. Though it took multiple air attacks and a submarine torpedo attack to finally sink her. Bonus content includes 2 japanese aircraft identification films: - Identification of Planes: Japanese Type 96 & 97 A Signal Corps film about how to distinguish and identify various type of japanese fighter aircraft. Well presented and of top quality production-wise. (11 min.) - Recognition of the Japanese Zero (Ministry of Information) This is a slightly newer training film for airmen that features actual footage of a captured Japanese Zero plane. Key characteristics and identifications tips are show in great detail, and then there is a short dramatised story featuring then actor Ronald Reagan as a fighter pilot who was sure he had correctly identified a plane as the enemy. A terrific classic that should not be missed. (19 min.)
