Description: Herter Brothers Antique One (1) Armed Ladies Parlor Chair 1890’s Rosewood Brocade Super Rare. The firm of Herter Brothers, (working 1864–1906), was founded by German immigrants Gustave (1830–1898) and Christian Herter (1839–1883) in New York City. It began as a furniture and upholstery shop/warehouse, but after the Civil War became one of the first American firms to provide complete interior decoration services. With their own design office and cabinet-making and upholstery workshops, Herter Brothers could provide every aspect of interior furnishing—including decorative paneling, mantels, wall and ceiling decoration, patterned floors, carpets and draperies. This is a one-arm ladies chair made by Herter Brothers in the 1890’s. Most likely it was part of a parlor set, which usually included a love seat, a two-armed gentleman's chair, and a one-armed ladies' chair. They made these chairs with one arm and low to the ground because the ladies of the time wore dresses with lots of fabric in their skirts, covering over one or more petticoats. They made them low to the floor so that ladies could remove their shoes without having to bend over too far. This style was part of the late Victorian Aesthetic Movement. If you want more pictures please let me know as I can get whatever specific pictures or angles that you need to make an informed purchase decision. I can only take 12 pictures to list this item. I want the potential buyer to be 100% satisfied prior to purchase. I would rate the overall condition of this rare chair in very good to excellent condition. Being made in the 1890’s there are some minor scratches on the wood legs towards the bottom which are hardly noticeable. The seat, backrest, and armrest cushions are in very good condition. This chair may have been reupholstered but I am not sure. Even so, it is gorgeous !! The detail to quality and craftsmanship on the wood is amazing. Please notice the intricate carvings especially on the front of armrest. You cannot find anything like this anymore. It does come with wheels for easy mobility. As stated above, I want the buyer to be 100% satisfied so the purchase is a “win-win” for buyer and seller. I understand that this is a large $$ purchase and want to make sure that the buyer knows it’s not in perfect condition but in very good condition for its antique age.
