Published 2023 This book is a true story about the men who climbed into the cabs of huge steam locomotives and operated them during the age of steam-powered train travel along the Union Pacific Railroad. The author allows the reader to peer into both the engine cab and household residence of a UP employee and his family living in Wyoming during the 1929-1960 era. A second-generation UP railroader, the author joined the company in 1941 as a 17-year-old fireman in freight service between Rawlins and Green River. He concluded a 49-year-career with Union Pacific as a senior engineer out of Rawlins in 1990. An excellent observer of human character, Harvey's writings explore not only the work relationship that transpired between the engineer and the fireman aboard a coal-burning, fire-breathing stem locomotive, but also the personal relationship that developed between the two men. Together, these human bonds often determined how quickly a train got "over the road" while transversing the Union Pacific's Overland Route. This is ultimately a story of one railroad family, their choice to follow a railroader's way of life, and the many personalities they encountered along the tracks of American history.
