Description: This vintage real photo postcard features British actress and singer, Hilda Jacobsen (1879-1954). She was popular in the Edwardian era and appeared in both Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as, Edwardian musical comedies. She was a mezo soparano. Jacobson was born in London. Her father was a cigar dealer. Her cousins included actresses Nora Kerin, Julia Neilson , Lily Hanbury, and Hilda Hanbury. She clearly was loaded genetically to become an actress. She made her London debut at the Lyric Theatre in 1899. She played in "Fiodora" at the Lyric between 1899 and 1900. She joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in1n 1900 and appeared in a revival of "The Pirates of Penzance". Some of her acting roles with the company included "H.M.S. Pinafore", "Princess Ida" and the "Gondoliers". She left the D'Oyly company in 1901. She continued her acting career and in 1904 to marry comedian and actor, Lawrence Rushworth (1881-1943). The 1911 English census listed her as an "Actress and Singer" but in 1939, her occupation was listed as "unpaid domestic duties". This postcard was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (No.1692a). Jacobsen's postcard portrait was taken by the Johnston & Hoffmann studio. The message on the postcard was written in 1906. There is a crease in the card's right bottom quadrant. The postcard is in fair condition (see scans)
