FRANK BROWN HISTORY Frank Chouteau Brown (1876 – 1947) was an American architect, born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and educated at the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts, the Boston Art Club and in Europe. In 1902, he began practice in Boston and from 1907 to 1919, was editor of the Architectural Review periodical. In 1916, he became a member of the faculty of Boston University and in 1919, head of the Department of Art and Architecture. He was a well know and respected writer of Architecture. ARTHUR HASKEL HISTORY Arthur C. Haskell was born on January 23, 1890 in Salem, Massachusetts . After high school he worked at drafting in the offices of Ralph Adams Cram and at other Boston architectural firms. Between 1910 and 1922, he taught himself the art and craft of architectural photography, using an 8 x 10 view camera. The architect Frank Chouteau Brown provided him with some of his earliest commissions, and also invited him to take pictures for the White Pine Monograph Series of illustrated essays on early American architecture. Haskell went on to provide many of the images used in that series. During the late 1920s, Haskell chose architectural photography as his profession, taking assignments from major Boston architectural firms. During the 1930s he made images for the Historic American Buildings Survey . The photography of early buildings became his specialty. He was celebrated for the beauty and clarity of his images, of which he produced several thousand. Haskell died on August 20, 1968, in Montpelier, Vermont. WHITE PINES HISTORY The White Pine Series of Architectural Monographs, as a bi-monthly publication launched in 1914 by the White Pines Bureau. Architect Russell F. Whitehead was hired to supervise the series with Julian Buckly as photographer. In 1932 the Monograph series became absorbed into the Pencil Points architectural journal as a regular feature. The documentation of historic structures with photographs and measured drawings complemented the "Comparative Details" feature which published construction details for contemporary projects. The Monograph series ended in June 1940. Many of its contributors were the most important and influential historians and writers of their time with many becoming involved in the Historic American Buildings Survey. The White Pine Monograph represents some of the finest profession details and history of American Architecture. Although most of these Monographs have been reprinted, originals have become increasingly scare and an important part of any collections of historic American Architecture.TERMS OF SALEGENERAL: We try very hard to please our customers.
