Description: Read the description - please. HUGE 3 & 3/16” custom chess board. I ordered this thick maple mahogany chess board from a woodworker years ago to use with my 6” House of Staunton Imperial Collectors set. The chess set was over $1000 so I figured spending $500 on a custom board for the pieces made sense. Oddly enough, House of Staunton never made a board big enough to fit the extra large set. So I had to go custom. Well… I sold the set years ago and the buyer didn’t want the shipping cost associated with the board. I have added a photo of the pieces which fit the set perfectly. Yes, that is my full grown son standing behind it. This board is for a large chess set with 2”+ diameter bases. It is far too big for tournament chess or for a regular chess set. You can see how large this board is when compared to a standard Drueke king (see photos). The condition of the board is excellent. Extremely solid! Hardly used it. However, over time the board has bowed a little due to the nature of wood blocks glued together and the sheer size of it. It is not bad and can be used as is. If you know a wood worker the face of the board could be re-planed to create a perfectly flat surface that would never bow (as the wood has aged for 20 years (!)) It has been done swelling and shrinking many years ago. Also, the outer trim of the board could be redone. (Please see photos.) It is separating from the initial tight fit but it is still very solid. The board is completely solid and useable as it is right now. I’m just nitpicking how to get it in perfect condition. The squares are over ONE HALF INCH THICK. It’s a bit heavy but I will ship it for free with the buy it now price because I have no use for it and hope someone with an amazing 6” Imperial House of Staunton set will see it and grab it for their collection. You SIMPLY cannot find a board this big. No one makes them because they are too large. The chess set in the photo is NOT FOR SALE with this board. I’m only showing it for reference. Obviously this board was made for chess but could also be used for a large checkers set.
